20 years of passion in crafting art pieces

Jason Karuweni is the embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit that South Africa needs to revive the economy.

For the last 20 years he has not allowed the economic climate to distract him from living his dream, which is to craft art pieces.

Karuweni finds his inspiration for sculpting art wonders from the material used from a drum.

He finds his inspiration in nature, creating art work such as elephants, flowers, the sun, crocodiles and even faith messages.

Since 2012 he has been selling art pieces behind the Retail Park in Edgar Road, Beyers Park.

“I developed this passion for art while in school. Since then I have continued to sculpt my work and have been making a living out of it,” he said.

“This job puts bread on my table. We all know unemployment is rife in the country, so I decided to be my own boss.

“Hopefully, in years to come, my business will expand and I will be able to employ people who have the same passion as me.

“I believe there is no excuse when you struggle to make a living. There is plenty of opportunity out there to start your own business, or just to do something with your hands.”

The demand for his art work is evident at month-end or over weekends, when clientele flock to buy his creations.

“I even have tourists who stay in Boksburg who buy from me; some will even order something different and then I am willing to oblige,” he said.

”That is only way to make a success of your life.”

And, being outside in the sun every day, surrounded by his work, is just an added bonus.
