Protest along North Rand Road: Traffic is flowing, protesters still on scene

About 150 protesters - members of the trade union Saccawu - is still on the scene along North Rand Road at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.

It is believed 145 workers of Birchwood are protesting over retrenchment.

Traffic is, however, flowing and police are present.

According to a Saccawu (South African Commercial and Allied Workers Union) statement, the trade union is unhappy over Birchwood’s decision to retrench the employees.
It appears as if Saccawu deems that Birchwood management refused to comply with requirements of Section 189(3) of the Labour Relations Act.
Saccawu has said in the statement that the country faces massive developmental challenges including high levels of unemployment and retrenchment of 145 workers by a company (Birchwood) that is not pleading poverty will only worsen the challenge of unemployment.
The Advertiser is waiting for comment from Birchwood.
