Alert police officers thwart theft spree
Boksburg police have over the weekend arrested several suspects, who allegedly embarked on a theft spree which included targeting Unilever, copper cables and houses in the Boksburg area.
Police officers patrolling the area caught some of the suspects in the act, while others were caught apparently on their way to cause trouble.
In the first incident, police noticed a suspicious-looking white Toyota Tazz parked next to Unilever.
Upon investigation, they noticed people receiving boxes containing packets of soap powder over the fence of the factory and loading them into the Tazz.
The officers kept the suspects under observation, while they were still loading their loot.
They then surprised the two suspected thieves, approaching them and eventually placing them under arrest for theft.
The 13 boxes containing packets of washing powder were confiscated.
The getaway vehicle was also seized.
* The team also pounced on three suspected burglars during the early hours of Sunday, August 23.
According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, the patrolling officers spotted a suspicious-looking trio carrying a big plastic bag.
Upon investigation, they found the men in possession of housebreaking equipment, including a side cutter, a pair of pliers, screwdrivers and gloves.
It is believed that the police thwarted the men’s apparent plans to commit housebreaking(s).
The trio was charged with possession of housebreaking equipment.
* Moments later, the Boksburg police arrested a gang of men after they were found digging up copper cable in Parkrand.
They were charged with theft of copper.
* After receiving a tip-off from members of the public, members of the task team also arrested eight suspects for drug-related crimes over the weekend.
Boksburg has recently seen an upward trend in property crimes, including burglary and theft.
This has, however, prompted the Boksburg police to devise a new working system to outwit and thwart potential criminals planning to target residents.
“The no-nonsense members of the recently formed Boksburg Task Team are among others who are ridding the Boksburg policing precinct of criminals, and making the area a safe place in which to live and do business,” said Ngobese. -@FanieFLK
