Month-long ordeal over blocked drain finally over

For an entire month customers at the East Rand Retail Park had to deal with the sewer smell that emanated from the parking lot at the back entrance to the shopping centre.

The origin of the odour was the sewer that was blocked, causing toilet tissues, along with sanitary towels, faeces and plastic to float around the parking lot.

According to Susan le Roux, who works at the Health Worx Medical Centre, this is not the first time the mall has faced this issue of a blocked drain.

“It’s a health scare when a drain is blocked. Our consulting room is near the drain so, for a long time, we couldn’t even open windows because the smell was so unbearable,” said le Roux.

She added that the sewerage problem did affect business.

One customer, Puleng Ntsala, said:“I stayed away from the drain because it was clearly unhygienic. I even found parking far away because, just by looking at the drain, I wanted to be sick.

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, a mainline sewer blockage occurred in Edgar Road, Beyers Park.

“This primary sewer blockage caused a further, secondary blockage further upstream, in the proximity of East Rand Retail Park.

”The section of pipe is in excess of 6m deep, which made operations problematic.

“We managed to clear both blockages on Tuesday, August 11. The matter is therefore resolved.”
