Blankets, painting and food for the needy on Mandela Day
Scores of Boksburg people, including NGOs and governmental institutions, spent their time on July 17 and 18 giving the needy a helping hand as part of the international Mandela Day.

Tanya Metelerkamp, from Smiley Kids, excitedly spent her 67 minutes painting the corridor at Igugulethu Place of Safety, in honour of Madiba.

The faces of children at St Francis lit up when they were visited by the Shuffling Walk Team, on Mandela Day. The visitors interacted with the children and gave them cupcakes, teddy bears and soft drinks. As part of Mandela Day, the Reiger Park SAPS and CPF, as well as the Youth Desk, donated blankets and food parcels to Avulekile Amasango Crèche. Const Yvonne Khoza is seen handing out lunch to the children of the crèche.
Tumelo Shebu from Woolworths East Rand Retail was among the staff members who spent their 67 minutes painting for the children of St Francis, on Mandela Day. The event was deemed a reciprocal exercise, as it offered a great team-building opportunity for the staff, while making a difference in the community.
In honour of the anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela, staff from several Woolworths branches in the region spent their day giving back to the community. This group of Woolworths staff members spent their 67 minutes painting children’s bedrooms at the St Francis Care Centre.
As part of celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day, Past Ronnie Naidoo, of Siloam Ministries and New Life Recovery, in Brakpan, along with members of his church, spent a portion of their Mandela Day cleaning a filthy classroom at Dromedaris Primary, in Reiger Park.
The Reiger Park police and CPF, as well as the Youth Desk and other community leaders, celebrated Mandela Day by spending time dancing and singing with the children of Avulekile Amasango Crèche, in the Delmore informal settlement. They made lunch for the little ones and handed out blankets and food parcels, donated by the station’s admin staff and the chairperson of the CPF, Pastor Frances Coetzee, to the crèche.
