During the joint operation, on Friday, July 10, the team pounced on the suspects, seizing fake DVDs and CDs of music and movies, with an estimated street value of about R8 000.
The arrested suspects, most of whom are foreign nationals, appeared in court on June 13, on charges of possession of and dealing in counterfeit goods.
Their stocks were taken to the Boksburg police.
The Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT) applauded the police for their efforts to root out piracy, adding that the effects and implications of piracy are huge, as they demoralise creative minds and affect the income of the artists.
The organisation also issued a call to consumers to assist the police and anti-counterfeit organisations across the continent to root out piracy.
Despite the intermittent arrests of people dealing in counterfeit goods, the Advertiser has discovered that counterfeit CDs and DVDs are available literally on every street corner in Boksburg town, Dunswart, Boksburg North, East Rand Mall and other areas.
