Learners’ reading skills put to the test

Several learners from various schools in Ekurhuleni had their reading skills tested on June 23.

In fostering the culture of reading, the City of Ekurhuleni hosted the annual Strongest Link competition at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

Grade Six to Grade 12 learners have been practising and perfecting their reading skills since last year, by reading fiction and non-fiction books in preparation for this year’s instalment of the competition.

The competition is a culmination of a reading challenge which began in April, last year, and the mind bending exercise saw learners competing by reading various books in isiZulu, Sesotho, English and Afrikaans.

“As the City of Ekurhuleni, we want young people and all members of the community to know that books are fun; libraries are the best places to hang out because reading broadens one’s mind and capacity to think,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

He added that, through this competition, they aim to make reading a lifelong habit and also hope to generate interest in libraries and books amongst the people of Ekurhuleni.
