Missing N17 overpass bridge barrier finally replaced

The missing N17 overpass bridge barrier, on Trichardts Road, from Parkrand towards Sunward Park, has finally been replaced, after approximately six months.

According to the complainant, who wishes to remain anonymous, the barrier was missing due to a motor vehicle accident that occurred on that part of the road a couple of months ago.

“The open area, where the barrier should be, is wide enough for someone to fall through,” said the complainant.

“Pedestrians and cyclists, who include young children, cross the bridge every day.”

The missing barricade was about 1m long.

The complainant allegedly reported the missing barrier on numerous occasions and was told that it was not a matter of urgency to replace it.

The Advertiser reported the problem to the Ekurhuleni Metro, but, according to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, Sanral is responsible for maintenance of the barrier on the Trichardts Road bridge.

After the Advertiser notified Sanral about the missing barricade, the agency’s general manager of communications, Vusi Mona, responded that the bridge parapet had been repaired by Sanral’s Routine Road Maintenance section.

Sanral was also initially under the impression that this section of the road falls under the jurisdiction of the Ekurhuleni Municipality.

“However, this proved not to be the case, as it is an overpass bridge and falls wholly within the N17 road reserve and, thus, Sanral is the owner,” said Mona. – @IschkeBoksburg
