Ikhambi sponsors wheelchair on International Disability Day

Individuals and businesses alike took time to celebrate the international day of people living with disabilities, on December 3.

“Abled individuals rarely take the time to consider the challenges that are coupled with being disabled,” says Ikhambi group CEO, Mike van Wyk.

Staying true to his saying, “doing well by doing good, Van Wyk decided to go one further than appreciating this day by identifying an individual that needed assistance to minimise the burden and hardship of their disability.

Van Wyk tasked his team to begin a search for the individual that would be most suitable in receiving assistance this year in appreciation of this international day.

Following the call to action, a young man named Bongani was identified.

Bongani is a young enthusiastic man who works at Emperors Palace as a switchboard operator.

Bongani said his current wheelchair is significantly heavy and is failing to maintain its current shape.

The shape and form of his current wheelchair makes travelling via public transport rather challenging.

Van Wyk said Ikhambi will purchase a new wheelchair that is better suited in weight to allow for easier travelling and accessibility in public transport facilities.

“I am so proud to work for a company like Ikhambi, they really know and understand the value of being human,” says Ikhambi’s sister at the Emperors Palace Wellness Centre, Juan Munnik.

“We interact with Bongani on a daily basis and know that this new chair will have far greater reaching positive impact on him as a person and towards his job.” – @IschkeBoksburg
