This is according to the Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, who says the installation of the crossing will be scheduled once a contractor for the purpose has been appointed.
The investigation follows concerns from residents regarding continuous public speeding down the mentioned street, day and night.
“I have written numerous letters and we have pleaded to the Council before, asking if they could erect speed bumps, but they want us to pay for the speed bumps ourselves,” says concerned resident, Anita le Roux.
According to Le Roux, motorists like to avoid Cason Road due to the traffic lights; therefore, they take a shortcut between Campbell and Trichardt roads, and then down into Champion Street.
Le Roux has witnessed a child nearly being knocked from his bicycle by a speeding motorist.
“It’s really a sad situation – the New Comet Primary kids, as well as the elderly citizens from Schribante Haven also use this road when walking to the clinic, or the children crossing the street to go to school.”
Gadebe says it is expected that a contractor will be appointed by the end of January 2015. – @IschkeBoksburg
