“Government officials told us that we must completely feel at ease, because the metro has resolved to take actions to stop the planned evictions.
“They have also called for service delivery in the informal settlement to be stepped up,” says a community leader.
The metro has, however, not yet responded to the Advertiser’s request for detailed information on this issue.
After learning about their planned evictions, tension in the area began to simmer with residents threatening to defend their homes with anti-eviction protests.
In protest against the proposed eviction of Angelo informal settlement residents, from their homes located on privately-owned property, thousands of the land occupiers recently marched to the municipal offices in Boksburg CBD to hand over a memorandum of grievances.
They demand that the metro provide them with alternative land or stop Living Africa Properties from evicting them from their homes.
Following the march, service delivery, including garbage collection, has been stepped up in the area.
The Solid Waste Management has cleaned all the mountainous piles of rubbish, and collects rubbish from the area regularly.
The land owner, Living Africa Properties, sought a High Court order for the removal of the more than 10 000 people, who stay on the piece of land, known as ‘Angelo Dump’, located along Main Reef Road, Boksburg.
According to Living Africa, the residents have to vacate the property on or before February 1, 2015. – @FanieBoksburg
