Metro cleans up the mess in Angelo

Angelo informal settlement residents breathed a sigh of relief recently when the municipality finally sent out its employees to clean up the household waste, which recently left the area in an extremely unpleasant smell.

Following complaints by residents about the garbage pick-up delays running for weeks, the Advertiser visited the area and found that streets in the area were drowning under mountainous stinking piles of rubbish.

The residents have been putting out their refuse daily and as a result, the waste accumulated in the area forcing residents to live next to piles of uncollected waste.

However, one of the residents, Khomola Daniels, who lives next to one of the piles of waste, says he was relieved to recently see the workers clean the area.

“Although they are no longer collecting the waste daily, I’m so happy that the problem has been resolved,” says Daniels.

According to a spokesperson for the metro, Themba Gadebe, the collection of refuse in informal settlements is not regular due to various factors such as the availability of personnel, refuse bags, vehicles and time.

He states that these resulted in servicing the areas on weekends, in some instances, adding that some areas have been allocated nine cubic meter containers. – @FanieBoksburg
