Residents frustrated at delayed rubbish collections

Residents of Angelo informal settlement, next to Angelo Hotel, are crying foul at the municipal’s delay in collecting garbage from the area.

According to the frustrated residents the area has not had refuse collections for almost two months now.

Following complaints by residents about the garbage pick-up delays, the Advertiser visited the area and found that streets in the area were drowning under mountainous stinking piles of rubbish.

The streets are strewn with piles of litter, posing a health risk for residents.

“It’s really smelling, and I worry that the longer it’s left there the more of a risk it will pose to families and our children,” says Khomola Daniels, a resident who lives near one of the piles of rubbish.

“We have been complaining to Ward 33 Clr Hillary Coke about this rubbish since early September, but have been disappointed as the collections have not been taking place at all.

“We used to have our waste collected daily, and we haven’t had any notification from the Council about any changes.”

The residents demand action to immediately remove the waste piles in the area, which they say attract rodents and feels like living next to rotting bodies.

According to Daniels the municipal cleaners told them that they don’t have refuse bags.

On Friday, October 24, the rubbish was still not collected.

Coke admitted that she received complaints from residents, adding that she reported the matters to Solid Waste Management.

“I have also approached the refuse removal team working in the area, and they told me that they are doing their utmost to clean the area, but they, however, can’t clear the piles of rubbish because they are not provided with sufficient tools, including refuse bags,” says Coke.
