The abrupt and tragic death of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, left the country shocked, even triggering widespread calls of the reinstatement of the death penalty.
The star goalkeeper was shot dead in Vosloorus on Sunday, October 26, while visiting his on-off pop star girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.
The Advertiser sought to find opinions from residents about the murder, with majority believing that the perpetrators should be handed maximum punishment.
Sello Diutlwileng. : “I was very hurt when I learnt of the news, I’m a Kaizer Chiefs fan, but I’m heading to Carnival Mall right now to get an RIP Senzo Meyiwa T-shirt. The problem is our justice system is failing us. People are not scared to kill anymore, because they know they’ll get arrested and soon released after a few months.”
RJ Roets.“It’s bad man, it’s heavy. There’s more to the story than what meets the eye; it was made to look like a robbery. There’s something behind the story. They guys who did this should be given life.” – @SabeloBoksburg
Lydia Thipe. “Eish, I don’t know what to say really. I just feel bad for the family and his wife.”
Solly Masilela. “I think they should find the murderers and give them all life sentences – seeing that there is no death sentence. I’m not sure what was in it for them, because they now living life on the run; they’re probably in a bush somewhere.”
Anni Egerer. “It’s very sad, apparently the girlfriend didn’t even call the Meyiwa family to give her condolences. The perpetrators should be given life sentences. It’s bad enough that the death sentence was taken away.”
Curnel Alexander. “From my side, it’s the same thing that happened to Lucky Dube; talented people with money, important people are being taken away from us. Criminals are taking over in South Africa; severe punishment must be given to the guilty parties, we can’t live like this anymore!”
Joe Da Mera. “In this country murder is acceptable unfortunately; it’s tragic.”
Freddie Slubber. “I think it’s not good (Meyiwa’s killing); people go around shooting people, it’s not right to go ahead and shoot somebody. Today’s life is dangerous; our streets are not safe anymore.”
