Ekurhuleni plans to build 20 more reservoirs
Following the recent technical glitches that resulted in almost a month long water supply interruption, Ekurhuleni plans to build 20 more reservoirs by 2021.

This is according to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.
“Rand Water has supplied water to Gauteng since 1906 without fail and no one could anticipate a challenge such as the one recently experienced. In this regard, the City of Ekurhuleni has already begun working on the future Water Management Plan.
“Chief in the plan is the exploration of early warning system, which would be used to indicate dropping water levels and allowing for speedily interventions.”
He adds that this will be achieved through a telemetric system which will synchronize all the reservoirs, making it easy to divert water from one reservoir to another.
“This process will also include the harmonisation of the City’s underground spatial development so that the City’s pipes are coordinated and enabled to distribute water from one reservoir to another.”
Gadebe says that the City is working to construct two additional water reservoirs in Palm Ridge and Etwatwa, which are expected to be complete by 2015.
“This will take the number of reservoirs in the City from the current 71 to 93.”
Clr Bruna Haipel, Shadow MMC for Water and Energy, says the DA welcomes the expansion and development to improve service delivery in the metro.
Reservoirs will be built in the following areas:
• One reservoir in Benoni for R200-m
• Six reservoirs in Brakpan R250-m
• Six reservoirs in Nigel for R256-m
• Six reservoirs in Kempton Park for R286-m
• One reservoir in Vosloorus for R195-m
