Metro investigates giant ‘sinkhole’

The Ekurhuleni municipality says its engineers are presently undertaking investigation to identify the root cause of what appears to be a giant sinkhole that recently opened up in Jerusalem informal settlement.

According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni officials are working to discover the source of the sinkhole, and the outcome of the investigation will then determine who will be held liable for the problem.

Meanwhile, residents of the area suspect that a collapsed abandoned mineshaft is the cause of the sinkhole.

The community wants those responsible to cordon the site off and then fill the shaft, because it poses an immediate threat to their safety. – @FanieBoksburg
