Murdered for R300 000 worth of jewels
Police have confirmed that Nthabiseng Selesho was killed over R300 000 worth of jewellery.
Soweto Police Cluster spokesperson, WO Kay Makhubela, says the three suspects who have been arrested – a woman, her fiancé and her ex-husband – first ordered R1 000 worth of jewellery from a jewellery store located in the south of Johannesburg on Thursday, September 4.
Makhubela says Selesho, an employee of the store, went to deliver the ordered jewellery to a Van Dyk Park woman, who has been a client of the store since 2007.
Selesho had an additional order of about R300 000 worth of jewellery, which she was supposed to deliver afterwards, to other clients.
“When she arrived at about 1pm, the client behaved as normal by accepting her order, and electronically made a R1 000 payment,” says Makhubela.”
All of a sudden, the trio attacked Selesho in the house, overpowered her and took all her jewellery.
“They strangled her then shoved her inside her vehicle, and drove to Lenasia. Selesho’s body was placed on the backseat of the vehicle, which was doused with petrol and set alight.”
Both the vehicle and Selesho were burnt beyond recognition. It’s unclear if Selesho was already dead when they shoved her into the car. Back in Boksburg, a case of a missing person was registered at the Dawn Park police station.
Police immediately initiated a search for Selesho.
A report of a burning vehicle in Lenasia on Friday, September 5, provided the police with a breakthrough in the missing case. Upon discovering the burnt vehicle at around 3am, the police, however, could not yet ascertain if it was Selesho’s vehicle.
It was then later confirmed that the car belonged to Selesho, and that the unrecognisable burnt human body was Selesho. Upon further investigation, police were led to the trio’s house in Van Dyk on Tuesday, September 9.
The alleged buyer of the stolen jewellery was on Wednesday, September 10, taken in for questioning.
According to Makhubela, the woman who was one of the buyers, confessed that she and her co-accused robbed and killed Selesho.
The trio appeared in court on Thursday, and are facing charges of kidnapping, robbery and murder.
