Paroled alleged child killer back in prison

The suspect in the murder of Cuburne van Wyk (3) was on August 29, sent back to prison after the Parole Board took a decision to withdraw his parole.

Katlego Phoku, otherwise known as “Chicken”, recently charged with the murder of Cuburne, was on parole when the murder occurred.

Chicken was previously convicted of a criminal offence, and served a portion of his sentence before he was eventually released on parole.

However, the parole board has on August 29, deemed Chicken not to have been sufficiently rehabilitated, and he will now serve the remaining three years of the previous sentence behind bars.

His alleged involvement in the murder of Cuburne has apparently prompted the parole board’s decision.

Details about his past criminal conviction are, however, still sketchy.

Cuburne’s partially burnt body was found at a mine dump, in Reiger Park, three days after he was reported missing.

Exactly a week after the child was kidnapped, EMPD officers arrested Phoku on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering the little boy from Ramaphosa.

He was cornered in Lambton.

A witness has already positively identified Phoku as the man who was last seen walking with Cuburne.

He was charged with murder and kidnapping, and has already appeared in court thrice.

The accused previously told the court that he would like to represent himself at trial, but he changed his tune when he made his third appearance on Tuesday, September 2.

He told the court that he now wants free legal aid representation.

The case was then postponed for Chicken to apply for legal aid.

He hopes to know the outcome of his application for free legal aid representation when he appears in court again on September 17.
