A high-speed chase by the Boksburg police recently led to the arrest of a man, suspected of stealing vehicles in the city centre, along with other criminals.
The whole drama began when the arrested man and his accomplices allegedly opened the locked door of a vehicle parked outside a building in Boksburg CBD, tampered with the ignition and tried to start it.
The car alarm reportedly went off and interrupted the would-be thieves.
They immediately abandoned their attempt to steal the vehicle, got into their vehicle and made a getaway.
A member of the public, who apparently witnessed the incident, alerted the police.
Swift action by patrolling officers saw them pursuing the getaway vehicle through the CBD, down to Boksburg South and into Dawn Park.
The suspects then fled on foot, but the 23-year-old was caught and charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle, while other charges may be added.
He has already appeared in court, and his accomplices are still at large.
According to Lieut Col Khumbulani Ndaba, of the Boksburg SAPS, the suspects could be linked to the Boksburg car theft spree.
“We are investigating whether the arrested man and his accomplices have ties to the string of motor vehicles – including trucks – that have been disappearing from the streets of Boksburg,” he said.
The suspects were identified as hailing from Vosloorus and their getaway vehicle, which belongs to a relative of one of the suspects, was confiscated.
In recent years, thefts from motor vehicles and thefts of motor vehicles have become epidemic in Boksburg and surrounding towns.
You can reduce the chances for thefts from vehicle by adhering to the following steps:
* Park your vehicle in well-lit and secure areas.
* Remove all valuable goods before exiting your vehicle.
* Ensure that all doors are locked and all the windows are closed, including the sunroof.
* Look out for suspicious persons hanging out in the area.
* Become eyes and ears of the police by reporting any suspicious activity you see in parking lots or in your neighbourhood to the police.
