Patrick Tombeen, a member of the Reiger CPF executive committee, died after he was shot six times, on Thursday, April 17.
According to Sgt Mashudu Phathela, spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, Tombeen, was shot dead from close range while he was seated in his vehicle along Bussard Street.
“Tombeen was at the time waiting to pick up his sister. According to what we know, a gunman jumped out of a silver Polo Playa and then walked over to Tombeen.
“The suspect opened fire, hitting Tombeen in the head, neck and right shoulder. After the shots rang out, someone saw the shooter running back to his Polo, before he drove away,” says Phathela.
Paramedics pronounced Tombeen dead at the scene a short time later.
Police believe that Tombeen was being trailed by the Polo Playa, before the shooting.
No suspects have been identified or apprehended at this time, but the circumstances surrounding the murder are under investigation.
Both Phathela and the Reiger Park CPF chairperson, Pastor Frances Coetzee described Tombeen as a man of honour, who through the CPF tried his best to keep the scourge of drugs and criminals off the streets of the Reiger Park policing precinct.
“This is a big loss for the CPF and his family, as well as the community he was serving,” says Coetzee.
On behalf of the CPF, Coetzee offers their condolences to Tombeen’s family.
Tombeen will be laid to rest on April 26, and he leaves behind his wife and children.
The series of gun-related crimes have struck fear into many Reiger Park and Ramaphosa residents. There has been a surge in armed attacks in the townships in the recent past, with the most shocking one involving a police officer.
