
According to Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, the operations started at midday on April 17.
“Two fatalities were recorded in Ekurhuleni since the start of the operation.
“One took place at 5.10am on April 18, at the intersection of Snake and Dube streets in Benoni, where a driver lost control and collided with a concrete wall.”
The second fatality occurred at 5.30am on April 20, at the intersection of North Rand and Rondebult roads.
“During this accident a taxi collided with a Tata sedan; the driver of Tata died on the scene.”
Kgasago adds that road users were reminded by way of education campaigns of the importance of obeying the rules of the road in order to avoid unnecessary loss of limb and life.
“Static and roving roadblocks targeting both hazardous locations in respect of accidents, smash-and-grabs and other crimes were the order of the day over the Easter weekend.”
Taverns were also targeted with the aim of ensuring that patrons don’t drink in public, as well as making certain that they comply with the conditions of their permits.
He adds that 23 suspected drunken drivers were arrested, 13 of which were in Vosloorus.
“Some 30 speedsters were arrested in Brakpan, Benoni and Kempton Park areas and 434 fines were issued to motorists for exceeding the speed limit in locations identified as hazardous due to speeding.
“Overall, 1 123 speed fines were issued Ekurhuleni-wide, and 12 people ended behind bars for drinking in public, two for being in possession of fake drivers licenses and one for impersonating a police officer.”
