Women to stand together against domestic violence

Men and women will have the opportunity to gather and stand together in protest against domestic violence and abuse at Birchwood Hotel, on Thursday, April 10, starting at noon.

Organised by the Women’s Hope, Education and Training (Wheat) Trust, the annual 1000 Women 1 Voice event aims to raise awareness against domestic violence and forms a platform for people to stand up against it.

The Wheat Trust is a South African women’s fund that promotes a culture of giving to empower grassroots women.

The 1000 Women 1 Voice initiative was launched by the Wheat Trust in 2004, and it is the second time that this event will take place in the Johannesburg area.

This exciting fundraising event is supported by 1 000 women and a few good men who take a stand against domestic violence and abuse, and advocate for a life free of violence for women and girls.

Domestic violence affects one in four South African women and the goal of the event is for people to stand together as they create awareness, educate and assist women towards restored dignity and economic empowerment.

At this event, personal hygiene items and soft toys are also donated, which are in turn distributed to women-led organisations in the region that provide emergency support, shelter and care to orphans and vulnerable communities.

The proceeds raised at this event enables the Wheat Trust to make small grants to grassroots women-led organisations that work in their communities to advance human rights for women, as well as to provide education, training, capacity building and technical support to more than 950 women-led organisations in South Africa’s rural and peri-urban areas.

At the event, guests can expect listening to incredible guest speakers and proudly South African entertainment.

A number of grassroots women-led organisations also attend the event and amplify their voices by showcasing their work, as well as the initiatives that they relentlessly work at to eradicate violence in their communities.

A three-course meal will also be served.

Those interested in attending and supporting this cause by adding their names to the growing list of South Africans who are no longer prepared to sit by in silence while this pandemic of domestic violence continues to escalate almost uncontrollably, can book a table of 10.
