Crowd threaten shop-owner to cover up robbery

A group of community members threatened to burn down a foreign-owned shop, in an attempt to cover up for robbers.

According to Sgt Mashudu Phathela, spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, two unarmed men confronted a shop owner, made him lie down on the ground, and stole a packet of nappies, at about 9.30am, on Monday, January 20.

At that precise moment, a group of residents arrived at the shop and tried to dissuade the owner from reporting the robbery to the police.

They told him that should he report the matter to the police, his shop would be burned down.

Despite the threat, he alerted the police about the robbery.

The robbers are known to the community, and one of them was arrested few minutes after the robbery.

The arrested 21-year-old was found still in possession of the stolen nappies.

He was charged with business robbery and was due to appeared in court on Tuesday, January 21.
