World Aids Day marathon promotes longevity and good health
Ekurhuleni hosted a mini World Aids Day marathon to raise awarness on the pandemic on December 1, in Katlehong.
The message behind the marathon was: ‘Knowing your HIV status helps you protect yourself and others, but knowing your HIV status and leading an active lifestyle ensures longevity and good health”.
Ekurhuleni, in partnership with Soul City, commemorated the day with a half marathon, 10km and 5km fun run.
“Those who are HIV positive should take responsibility and visit their health facilities to get their ARV treatment.
“Those who are HIV negative should also take responsibility to ensure they remain negative,” said the hostess of the race, member of mayoral committee for Sports and Recreation in Ekurhuleni, Clr Zeni Tshongweni.
“People who are HIV positive should lead positive lives and now that HIV does not mean it is the end of the world.
By adopting an active and healthy lifestyle people can lead long and healthy lives,” continued Tshongweni.
The Grand Master winner of the 10km race, 63-year-old Selli Hallem encouraged people to avoid over-eating and drinking.
“The golden rule of good health is to do everything in moderation, take good care of your bodies and prioritise good health throughout your lives,” said Hallem.
The theme for this year’s World Aids Day is “Get Wise. Get Tested. Get Circumcised”.
Men were encouraged to undergo counselling and testing, as well as to visit their health care centres to get circumcised.
Circumcision helps to reduce the risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases amongst men.
