A motor show to raise funds for children

Vintage, the latest models, used and brand new cars were all on display at a motor show attended by around 500 people on Saturday, December 14.

The show, which was hosted by ER Events, was held to raise funds for a bus to be donated to Poppyhuis, a children’s home in Springs.

“When I visited the home a few months ago, I noticed that the children were in need of transportation to school, and that is why we want to buy them a mini bus,” said organiser of the event Alan Nurse.

Nurse says the cost of the minibus is R300 000, which he hopes to raise through various fundraising initiatives.

Ernst Kleynhans (56) brought along his 1970 Ford Capri to be put on show.

The car which Kleynhans affectionately refers to as “baby” was built from scrap.

“It cost R25 000 to redo the original motor of the car, which was cleaned and put back. This is my hobby; I have three other cars which I’m working on,” says Kleynhans.

He encourages people to join car clubs, so they can make contacts and get second-hand car parts cheaper from other car collectors.

The motor show offered live music, a food court, and a beer garden, as well as a craft market where various items were on sale.

Funds were raised through gate takings, as well as raffle tickets which were on sale to stand a chance of winning an Extreme Bike electric bicycle worth R10 000.

The bike is still up for grabs and Nurse says those interested in standing a chance to win the bike can buy a raffle ticket as part of raising funds for Poppyhuis.

Nurse says a total of five thousand rand was raised from the mototrshow.
