Lack of functional hands is no challenge
Morena Tsotetsi (30), who is also known as DJ Roto, is a self-taught designer, producer, dancer and trainer from Windmill Park.
Tsotetsi was born with one finger on each hand, but has not allowed this physical challenge to stop him from pursuing his dreams.
Having attended a normal school, Tsotetsi was called names by the other able-bodied students.
He, however, turned the situation around by using the derogatory names as his DJ nickname before sticking with DJ Roto.
“I want to show the physically-challenged that when you’re disabled it’s not the end of the world,” says Tsotetsi.
He says his mother never hid his disability and taught him not to be ashamed of how he was born.
In 1998, Tsotetsi first started giving “pantsula” dance lessons, and now has a daily class where he teaches all dance styles to 18 children aged between the ages of eight and 24.
He not only gives dancing lessons, but also teaches children how to DJ.
Both classes are held at his home in Windmill Park.
In 2004, he came first in a talent show called 30 Seconds to Fame that was aired on TV, and was also featured on the show Big Up.
Tsotetsi says the recent shooting of a police officer in Windmill Park is just one of the many negative stories that are told of Windmill Park, giving it a bad name.
He would now like to showcase the talented of Windmill Park by staging a show on December 8.
“Through this event I would like to show that there are positive and good stories to be told about our community,” he says.
The show is titled Entertainment Against Negative Economic Issues and will take place at the Tribal House in Windmill Park extension nine.
“This event is aimed at raising funds for orphans, who will get presents and food on the day,” says Tsotetsi.
“I love doing this, but I would appreciate assistance in any way to host this show and to continue teaching these children.”
Tsotetsi is looking for assistance with a venue, as well as funds to help him with DJ equipment.
