Cleansing levy still being charged

On September 20, the Ekurhuleni metro admitted that the implementation of the R5.70 cleansing levy on accounts was erroneous and would be reversed.

It has, however, come to the attention of the Advertiser, that residents are still being charged a levy fee, as it appears on the municipal accounts.

Metro spokesperson Sam Modiba, says during a council meeting held in May 2013, the cleansing levy was debated, and it was resolved that the refuse removal tariff be increased with 15 per cent, inclusive of the cleansing levy.

“The R5 levy was, therefore, erroneously implemented as a separate charge effective from July 2013. Having noted the error, a detailed investigation was undertaken on the process to correct the administrative error in respect of the charged R5 cleansing levy,” says Modiba.

Modiba says to ensure that council complies within the legal framework of the Act, the administrative error will be corrected through the formal Adjustment Budget, which is planned for February 2014.

“Of note is that the administrative error in implementing the tariff had no financial effect on customers’ accounts,” he adds.
