Slovo child-rapist denied bail
About 60 angry residents of Slovo informal settlement marched to the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, on November 14, demanding that a suspect accused of rape should not be granted bail.
The 49-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, October 15, in connection with the rape of a girl (3).
The child was playing with other children outside her neighbours shack in the morning, when the alleged rapist, who lives in the neighbourhood, took her to a nearby bush.
Her mother then reported the matter to community members, and the police were also alerted.
A massive search, which involved the community, was then launched.
It was during the search that the community members stumbled upon the man and the child, at around 3pm.
Community members protested outside the court with signs saying “no bail for rapists, enough is enough”, and “stop abusing our children”.
“We are here because we want to make sure that this man do not get bail, because he has committed a terrible crime. The court must send him to jail, because that is where people who behave like him belong. Tough action must be taken against him,” says community leader Morris Mboxa.
The suspect made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on October 20, when he was denied bail.
The accused was denied bail the second time.
His next court appearance is on November 18.
