The ex-boyfriend doused his rival’s shack in Angelo informal settlement with petrol and set fire to it around 1am, on Monday morning, October 28, according to neighbours.
The fire jumped to nearby shacks, leaving three other families homeless.
According to neighbours, the man set his rival’s shack on fire because he was upset that his ex-girlfriend was involved with another man.
“I was still asleep when I heard people outside shouting ‘Kuyasha’ meaning it’s burning,” says Gertrude Langa, a neighbour whose shack and belongings were also destroyed.
“At the time my shack was also filled with smoke. I ran outside to find that the fire had spread and the couple was still trapped inside their shack,” explains Langa.
Langa described the incident as very unfortunate.
“It is terrible that a man, because of jealousy, would kill people like this, simply because his girlfriend dumped him.”
A case of arson was registered at the Boksburg SAPS and the suspect who also hail from Mozambique, is still at large.
The Advertiser visited the area on Monday, and found the fire survivors and their children with no shelter to sleep and food to eat.
All their belongings were burnt, including their food.
They appeal to anyone who might have means of helping them to please extend a hand.
