According to Vanessa Jackson, spokesperson for ER24, witnesses said the man was walking along the highway when a Volkswagen Golf struck him.
“Although the details of what exactly took place are not clear, it is believed that the man was flung onto the windshield and then the roof of the car, before he crashed down onto the road,” Jackson says.
She adds that paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man to be in a critical condition; the Advanced Life Support paramedic immediately started trying to stabilise him.
“They loaded him into the ambulance and rushed him through to Tambo Memorial Hospital, so that he could receive further urgent medical care.
“En route to hospital, paramedics had to initiate resuscitation efforts, as their patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated and his heart stopped beating,” says Jackson.
They managed to stabilise him, but he deteriorated twice more and they wheeled him into hospital while performing CPR.
The trauma team assisted with resuscitation efforts but, despite everything they tried, there was no improvement in the man’s condition and there was no other option but for the medical staff to declare him dead.
“The woman who had been driving the golf was left with relatively minor injuries, but she was in a state of severe shock and had pieces of glass all over her,” Jackson says.
“Members of another, private ambulance service, who were on the scene, transported the woman to a nearby hospital for further care.”
Police are still investigating all relevant details surrounding this collision and events leading up to the death of the pedestrian.
