Vox Pop: Proposed law to reduce alcohol limit for drivers

The Department of Transport has proposed an amendment to the National Road Traffic Act to reduce the legal alcohol content limit from 0.05 per cent to 0.02 per cent. The Advertiser asks the community if they agree with this proposal, and whether or not they think this law will reduce road accidents.

Linda Jacobs says: “It’s good, these people go out and enjoy themselves even with children in their cars, they drink and drive and put the lives of innocent people at risk, and they should be given a harsher sentence if they are caught.”

Kabelo Manamela says: “I second it, if the law is passed, it will definitely assist in reducing fatalities on the road.”

Nomsa Mndi says: “I don’t know if it will make a change, it goes with individuals, as long as there is still alcohol being made people will buy it and not abide to the limit.”

Colin HAdebe says: “With the accidents happening, it’s a good thing, and it can only help South Africa.”

Shadrack Lungu says: “I think it should be reduced even further, it should actually be totally banned so that people should not drink and drive at all.”

Mark Walker says: “It’s not so much the alcohol that causes accidents, it’s the speed, people don’t abide by the laws of the road.”

Johan Zeelie says: Its good, drinking and driving is wrong; they must bring the percentage down. When I drink I get my wife to drive me.”

Johanna Brits says: “It will definitely reduce accidents, especially amongst young people because they are very reckless, I was at my daughter’s matric farewell and I was shocked at the children drinking and driving.”
