Fighting cancer with cupcakes

The founder of Cupcakes for Hope, Sandra Cipriano, together with a few volunteer bakers, were hosted by the East Rand Traders Square on September 1, to create awareness about the plight of families with children affected by cancer.

By baking and selling cupcakes, this NPO aims to raise awareness and funds for families in need of medical assistance.

Sandra explains that once a child is diagnosed with cancer, medical bills begin to soar as treatment and doctor visits increase and, many parents find that they do not have enough funds to pay for chemotherapy either.

“We make two to three hospital visits a year to deliver, what we call bags of love, to parents who stay at their children’s bedsides during treatment.

“At hospitals, parents are not catered for and, therefore, our bags of love have little snacks that they can eat without having to make trips to the cafeteria,” she says.

Cupcakes of Hope have been involved with many projects and have, throughout the years, been able to assist cancer patients and their families.

The company is now preparing to host its biggest annual event, National Cupcake Day 4 Kids, which they host at various shopping malls all over South Africa, in an attempt to raise funds to help families affected by cancer.

East Rand Traders Square organised performers on the day to help attract the attention of the consumers in the flee market, and also donated all gate takings collected on Sunday to Cupcake for Hope.
