New ID difficult to duplicate

Home Affairs minister, Naledi Pandor, says it will be difficult for anyone to duplicate the features on the new smart ID card.

Speaking in the National Assembly during questions posed to ministers, Pandor says the key point is that every individual will have to present themselves for life capture.

“The security features are of a world-class standard and addresses some of the constraints that the department has experienced in the past,” she says.

She says that the card is going to be hard to duplicate, as the machinery is bigger and more sophisticated.

Pandor adds that the smart ID card will go a long way in eliminating the use of fraudulent IDs.

The department was allocated R6.7-bn in the 2013/14 financial year, and the bulk of the budget is going into developing the smart ID card.
